Representing dialogic argumentation

چکیده

Dialogic argumentation is a crucial component in many computational domains, and forms a core component of argumentation theory. This paper compares two approaches to dialogue that have grown from two different disciplines; the descriptive–normative approach of applied philosophy, and the formal, implemented approach of computer science. The commonalities between the approaches are explored in developing a means for representing dialogic argumentation in a common format. This common format uses an XML-based language that views locutions as state-changing operations, drawing on an analogy with classical artificial intelligence planning. This representation is then shown to hold a number of important advantages in areas of artificial intelligence and philosophy. q 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Emotional And Non Emotional Persuasion Strength

Emotional argumentation is the result of a rational form of reasoning by the Persuader, subsequently translated into messages by applying some variants of the ‘classical’ argumentation schemes. In this paper, we discuss which may be assumed to be the relative strength of emotional vs. rational persuasion strategies and how this has been represented in a dialogic persuasion testbed.

Argumentation in a changing world 5

10 Abstract Critical reasoning has been recognized as a valuable educational goal since the 11 end of the nineteenth century. The 13 shift to dialogism in programs to promote critical reasoning brings challenges concerning 14 evaluation. We depict such...

Students’ Argument Patterns in Asynchronous Dialogues for Learning

The research reported in this study focuses on how distance students can learn to use argumentation processes as a tool for learning. For ten weeks, 30 student teachers studied the webbased 15 credit course Teacher Assignment. Data were collected from five student groups’ asynchronous argumentation, relating to authentic cases of teacher leadership. Focus was placed on the extent to which stude...

Modelling Argumentation and Belief Revision in Agent Interactions

We describe a model for resolution of belief conflicts by argumentation in agent interactions, based on aspects of dialogic logic, speech act theory and belief systems research. This is part of a long term project on the relations between argumentation and cognitive change in collaborative problemsolving interactions. A set of communicative acts for argumentative interaction is defined, based o...

Analytic Frameworks for Assessing Dialogic Argumentation in Online Learning Environments

Over the last decade, researchers have developed sophisticated online learning environments to support students engaging in argumentation. This review first considers the range of functionalities incorporated within these online environments. The review then presents five categories of analytic frameworks focusing on (1) formal argumentation structure, (2) normative quality, (3) nature and func...
